First up, Sworn To Silence by Linda Castill.

This is a murder detective type novel. It centers around the chief of police in a small town with a large Amish population. The chief happened to be Amish once herself. The story revolves around a serial murderer. I loved most everything about this book, the characters are great and well established, it is suspensful, and a smooth easy read. If there was any complaint, the book is very graphic. Disturbingly so. I would still recommend it and my understanding is there are more by this author with the main character in them, that I most definitely want to check out.

Next up is They're Watching by Gregg Hurwitz.

This was such a good book with so many turns, you will be shocked what is going on all along and you will not see it coming! It is about a screenwriter who starts recieving mysterious cd's in the mail letting him know he's being watched. He quickly learns that his every move is being monitored and special instructions start coming in that he most decide wether to comply with or risk the consequence. It will take you to the very end of the book to learn what is happening, so good!!

Just jumped up one day, age 9, and said I want to take my training wheels off. It's not something we've ever pushed, we have plenty to work with with him and he could of cared less, didn't even touch the bike for a year. So, we were quite surprised. He got it, probably the 3rd or 4th try. It was such a reminder when I worry about things that Parker will most likely get to it when he wants too. When he has the desire and determination. And it's just not going to matter if that's at age 5 or age 9 in the long run with most things. True to Parker form, and boy did I learn this the hard way, it's on his clock and forcing him when he's not ready is just painful. I don't even want to think about those potty training days, when I finally came to this realization! I seriously need someone else to read this and explain to me the reviews. I feel like I'm on crack at this point, almost 5 stars and I'm just not getting it. The book was so nothing, I felt like I could of wrote it. Perhaps the only good thing about the book was it was free from the Amazon lending library, but I just wish I got what 117 reviews are talking about, because I'm at a loss! So boring.
Danahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03896052276912048144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388954268606303900.post-56402851679466872982012-10-15T08:44:00.000-07:002012-10-15T08:44:11.582-07:00Cooper turns 6 and loses the big oneSo, I'm very behind, but September 21st my baby turned 6. It's amazing how in the last month he has grown up so much from starting Kindergarten, let alone the last year. I can't say I don't miss the little guy that was sweet as sugar and loved me like no other, but seeing him become his own person more everyday is pretty awesome too. He has lots of attitude and is never wrong, much like his Dad. He loves school, loves it. He tells us things about it Parker never mentioned in 5 years, lol! Cooper played soccer this fall, and is looking forward to basketball this winter. He's bigger then any kid out there and the least aggressive, but is all heart. His favorite things are playing Wipeout, magnatiles, Angry Birds, and creating things in his room. Right now it is a school John and I have to attend every night and our teacher is Mr. Lee (Lee is his middle name). It's been a store, a restaurant, an art gallery, always something!

Here are some pictures from his birthday. Instead of a "big" party he choose a night at a water park hotel. We are going in a few weeks. We did have several get togethers to celebrate though and he was well spoiled.
In other big Cooper news, he lost his top tooth!! :((( This is very sad for John and I. I don't know, but it is one of those things we associate with him getting older that affects us. John is usually not sentimental about this type of thing, but the top tooth even does it for him. Not the best picture and he needs a haircut desperately but you get the idea here.
Same school, all day, what to do with myself, right? September is crazy busy, so I'll worry about that in October.

This picture is at the school open house. Parker is showing Cooper around the school. It was very cute.

Overall they are doing great.
Parker, who does not like school and will tell you how much he hates it if you ask, has adjusted without issue. There was lots of anxiety over the summer because he was going to be taking the bus home a few days a week. It was hard for me not to cave, especially when I can pick him up so easily. I've tried the bus in the past and have not been successful, he'd stress all day and not learn. But his brother really wanted to take the bus, so we thought it was only fair. Having Cooper to sit with along with a piece of gum in the backpack seems to be doing the trick to ease his anxiety a bit. I've very proud of him.
Cooper, who has always adored school and would ask why he didn't get to go more while in preschool, is exhausted. He enjoys school itself, but the nights have been rough. Crying, whiney, talking back, behavior issues, stuff we've never really dealt with, with him, much. He's never gone to school all day before though and it is only day 3 today, so I'm sure he will adjust soon. He is loving it at least! He's not use to having so much less time at home either. Through in soccer for the first time as well, and it's a lot to get use too.

Third and final book by this author. This one was rather, dark, so the title is rather fitting. It is about an adult woman researching the murder of her family when she was 7 years old by her brother. I think not only is the murder itself disturbing obviously but some of the characters, including the main one at times. It was probably by least favorite of all 3 books by the author but that is just because they are all so good, not because it was a bad book. I purchased all these on my Kindle, a rarity for me, and they were well worth it.

I borrowed this book free from Amazon's lending library. It has 4.5 stars and won some award as well, so I was excited to have access to such a "great" book free. It is about a family who's daughter/sister is kidnapped at age 3. The book is 2 years later. I'm a little dumbfounded by the hype. While not a bad book, it could not have been more predictable. The characters were not complex or interesting, I barely garnered sympathy for a mother who's child was kidnapped, the book was so lightweight in depth. Didn't do much for me, but I appear to be in the minority.Danahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03896052276912048144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388954268606303900.post-88063016117111225152012-08-29T07:21:00.003-07:002012-08-29T07:22:12.375-07:00Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

Loved Gone Girl so much, decided to check out another book by the same author. While I don't think Sharp Objects was quite as good, it was still really really good and highly recommended. It is about a young reporter now in Chicago that goes back to her small hometown on an assignment to report on some recent child killings. At the center of the story is the reporter and her relationship with her mother and a half sister she barely knows. Perhaps more disturbing then the murders is this family.

This past weekend I participated in The CRIM FIT in Flint. Granted, out of the many options, I just do the 5K walk, only 3.2miles and just a walk, this was still big for me. 2 months ago I was pretty much inactive. Any exercise pretty much just consisted of me cleaning the house, occassional swimming with friends on their boats, and maybe a frog hunt walk now and then, but not much at all and never to the point of working up a sweat. Especially for someone of my size with so much weight to lose, I was going no where. Having had enough of the steady weight gain, being so uncomfortable traveling I'd almost want to avoid it, and just flat out uncomfortable in my own skin, thinking about certain things coming up in my life that I dread doing fat, it was time to get up and move. I've started going to the gym 4-5 times a week, walking 3 miles on the treadmill. I've lost about 25lbs so far between that and curbing how much I eat. I have an incredible amount of weight to go, this isn't even enough for anyone to notice but me and how my clothes fit, but I'm still really proud of it. I am hoping for 15more pounds by my next doctors appointment in mid October. I still drink pop, eat bad foods, but it's just in moderation. Less often, smaller amounts...coupled with being active, it's working and I'm still happy. I've found a good balance. Maybe next year it will be the 8K walk for me!

My book club is starting back in this fall, and this is September's choice. Defending Jacob is about a well known and respected DA and a murder he is investigating that his 14 year old son is eventually charged with. It centers a lot around how the investiation unfolds, the court hearing, and most importantly this small family of the lawyer, his wife, and their son. The book was interesting in many faucets, especially in how the mom and dad react to each new detail they learn about the case and their son, how they treat each other, and where their thoughts go. The ending came quick and and defintely threw me for the unexpected. It made an already good read, that much better. Loved this!Danahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03896052276912048144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388954268606303900.post-49098528954946390642012-08-05T09:21:00.000-07:002012-08-05T12:15:15.993-07:00Photo a day - August 4th SOMEWHERE YOU SATFrom my trip to Seattle last week, the Great Wheel.

What Alice Forgot is about a woman who hits her head in spin class at the gym and wakes up thinking she is happily married, 28, and pregnant with her first baby. In reality she is 38, has 3 kids, and is going through a divorce. I absolutly loved this book! It reminded me how exciting life was when we were first married and had so much to look forward to. How much better my husband and I probably treated each other before the stresses of money and kids took over. While Alice is suffering through the first few days of her amnesia she cannot figure out why her husband is talking to her so different, so cold, why her body is so different, her friends so different, even her clothes. She goes over the excitment and nervousness of your first baby, in some regards it made me sad all that is behind me now. It's such a special time. It also reminded me of that time though in a fond way and to try harder to remember the happpiness we had when we were nearly married. And to think about how I've changted in the last 10 years, not just looks, but personality and values wise. I don't think this was meant to be such a deep book but for some reason it hit home for me and I just really enjoyed it.Danahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03896052276912048144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388954268606303900.post-81844443041070091792012-06-17T19:50:00.000-07:002012-06-17T19:50:42.359-07:002011/2012 School Year - First and Last day

This book started out a bit slow to me but it ended up being so good, I am so glad I stuck with it! The book bounces between the main character, Susan, a wet nurse, and then scattered in are various excerpts here of her mother's various clients, also a wet nurse, and why anyone would choose to use one. The book is not only about Susan and her occupation but her family and her baby. The last quarter of the book was hard to put down. Great read!
From Amazon:

Susan Rose is not your average Victorian heroine. She's promiscuous, lovable, plump, and scheming. Luckily for Susan, her big heart is covered by an equally big bosom, and her bosom is her fortune- for Susan becomes a professional wet nurse, like her mother before her, and she makes it her business to know all the intrigues and scandals that the upper crust would prefer to keep to themselves.
When her own child is caught up in a family scandal, Susan must use all of her street smarts to rescue her baby from the powerful mistress of the house. The scheme she weaves is bold and daring, and could spell ruin if she fails-but Susan Rose has no intention of failing.
Danahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03896052276912048144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388954268606303900.post-14598066782360239442012-04-26T08:55:00.001-07:002012-04-26T08:55:49.395-07:00Book Review: The Silence of Trees by Valya Dudycz Lupescu<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgos1VWDOqhZbDKSkDL_O0uBUAdTWZPpibxCG6gsmyAUbOB9puQKeAajfNfIjF8L9MmO7sQjHXgMnH8hQVUNZT9UDBWh1LpHWgtQ5EjcI69b7pTae21v2nBQOSl1pr1FMT6J8L9XN72iyc/s400/51q39jhhAXL__BO2%252C204%252C203%252C200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click%252CTopRight%252C35%252C-76_AA300_SH20_AA278_PIkin4%252CBottomRight%252C-56%252C22_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5723113120255239362" />
Summary from Amazon:

In Chicago's Ukrainian Village, Nadya Lysenko has built her life on a foundation of secrets. When she was sixteen, Nadya snuck out of her house in Western Ukraine to meet a fortuneteller in the woods. She never expected it to be the last time she would see her family. Decades later, Nadya continues to be haunted by the death of her parents and sisters. The myths and magic of her childhood are still a part of her reality: dreams unite friends across time and space, house spirits misplace keys and glasses, and a fortuneteller's cards predict the future. Nadya's beloved dead insist on being heard through dreams and whispers in the night. They want the truth to come out. Nadya needs to face her past and confront the secrets she buried. Too often the women of history have been silenced, but their stories have power-to reveal, to teach, and to transform. This is one such story.

I borrowed this free from Kindle's lending library. If you have this also, I do recommend it. It was a decent read and I know some months I have trouble finding a good one to read from what we have to pick.Danahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03896052276912048144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388954268606303900.post-80622714279336893312012-04-02T21:10:00.004-07:002012-04-02T21:17:50.699-07:00Few pics with the GrandparentsLike I said, he had a birthday week...
With my inlaws
<img style="display:block; Maybe because he doesn't look 9 to me. Or act 9 for that matter, but I am just in denial. He had just an amazing birthday. Really a birthday week, after we do the family get togethers. My inlaws got him a laptop my FIL refurbished for him. My parents got him his first big fish tank, which is his dream come true. From us, he opted for a party instead of going to a waterpark hotel for the night. That was today and it went so well! He was so spoiled rotten and I feel so blessed to have such awesome friends that went out of their way to get him things he loves, not your typical 9 year old gifts. Fish, a venus fly trap plant, ocean jewelry, a remote bird, super cool stuff.

Parker at 9....
He is still a happy boy and that has always been one of John and I's main objectives in raising him. It weighs heavily on our minds when we have to make the tough decisions. He does not love school, hates music class, but he is thriving in the CI classroom we moved him in academically and making progress. Something we didn't see much of last year, so it's very reassuring. He still loves ocean stuff, warm weather, swimming, catching frogs and turtles, and he's added some new interests to the mix. Tropical birds and fruit and geography. He has big plans one day to open up a Shedd's like aquarium in Detroit because there is an obvious need. He needs his space a little more then Cooper likes, but they do play together great outside, wrestle tons inside, and choose to share a room together. He's also one heck of a movie lover for not watching tv for 2 years because it scared him so much. He's still my loving, cuddly boy and March 31st, 2003 is honestly the best day of my life. He made me a mom.

His party...
<img style="display:block; The book bounces narrative between the various characters and also between past and present. I really enjoy the parts of the book that focused on their college days. I found the present portions boring. Not horribly bad, but not gripping and I wasn't excited to read this book everynight. I also felt like the main character wasted a big junk of her life based off of what happened in college and that made me sad and fustrated to think about. For me, the novel was just okay, I didn't find much special about it.Danahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03896052276912048144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388954268606303900.post-9604573638155967552012-02-18T07:40:00.000-08:002012-02-18T10:29:00.598-08:00Book Review - The Red Rooster by Michael Wallace<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHsJ9EMx7V4ofIfADVXxri9LxsO9Rf8hTSZj-tsMv-h-59GXkLaZBMRXGJJbq_2oVi-8Jg2LPl933DHFn-Fv5RJ_9v9TOrtihBljymPynAmtIwCBG9fy_78pwgGSfYDCjqcpIygFIn9NU/s400/51H5woBi5DL__BO2%252C204%252C203%252C200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click%252CTopRight%252C35%252C-76_AA300_SH20_AA278_PIkin4%252CBottomRight%252C-43%252C22_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710501320388239554" />
This book is available through Amazon's Prime lending program on your Kindle.

It mainly takes place in France during WWII. It's about a young girl who is out for justice for her father, who was arrested several years ago. She also has hope that he is still alive after being arrested and of finding him. She takes the route of seduction to accomplish this and zeroes in on the very man responsible for taking her father away. The book is sad and disturbing, something you'd expect from the topic at hand of course. I've read so many novels from this time era and it is yet again another interesting perspective on it. If you can handle the twistedness and descriptions of some torture scenes, it is a very good read.Danahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03896052276912048144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388954268606303900.post-19207555346573621732012-02-04T11:43:00.001-08:002012-02-04T11:51:36.406-08:00Book Review - Silver Girl by Elin Hilderbrand<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg31H_QT2Y6mzCn2hyphenhyphenkEp4jtGmIo3_YgOcoM1J4FLFyMgoON9xNZhFelg2mmmoGV5OkxnzBt_yWy1VkZlJHnvQoeWg0YlqIBmuIjsFS8_5Kxdhgb4jsizu9ese6UPtMjR0dQ4xJRK7aM_M/s400/41oe2jLedaL__BO2%252C204%252C203%252C200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click%252CTopRight%252C35%252C-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705368580616238130" />
Silver Girl is a fictional take on the Bernie Madoff scandel. The main character's husband is busted in a ponzi scheme and sent to jail for 150years, while she remains free but under investigation, loathed by millions, thousands of who have lost everything. In an act of desperation she calls her bff that she hasn't spoken to in years and asks to retreat to Nantucket with her for the summer. Her estranged best friend is going through her own hardship of being recently widowed and estranged from her child. The book is told between contracting voices between the two.

In true Hilderbrand fashion, the characters are flawed, enduring, and well rounded. It's the story itself that isn't incredibly gripping. I didn't find myself entralled by the book, until maybe the very end. It was a decent read at a price of buying used, but I wouldn't of been thrilled if I had spurgled to buy this new because of my love for the author. I think my expectations have gotten to high perhaps because the book really isn't that bad and I do recommend it.Danahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03896052276912048144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388954268606303900.post-34307883187067244782012-01-24T17:56:00.000-08:002012-01-24T18:05:08.414-08:00Book Review - A Ship Made of Paper by Scott Spencer<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhODIII6Vts3rxB_e4poe6Dc44UQe37FJ2DO9ky9BNdyJHwFROjm3VSjp1awMfXytzxljWxVP3B-7QsRxGbyuHZJW0NVe-_j1_o-T_V676AHovMBCpuli0dZmrO0dticfrlFcHv3zYPSAo/s400/41QF4ZG839L__BO2%252C204%252C203%252C200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click%252CTopRight%252C35%252C-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701382903670662018" />

This is the first book I've read by this author and I thought it was really good! I will definitely be keeping my eyes out for more titles by him.

A Ship Made of Paper is about two people having an affair and the wreckage they leave around them. Thrown into the mix is the fact that the man is white and the woman black. The man is not married but has been the only father his girlfriend's child knows and he adores her. I didn't have much sympathy for the male character, David, at all. I had trouble reconciling how he could risk so much and it made me sad. I was perhaps more sympathetic to the female, Iris, because her husband is rather douchy. Kind of interesting I would feel that way and perhaps not fair. The novel touches not only on cheating but racial issues as well. The last 10pages were very intense, I couldn't read them fast enough, and then the very last page I was just like, huh. The characters truly are consumed with each other at any cost. I do recommend!Danahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03896052276912048144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388954268606303900.post-17341343049779417502012-01-24T12:28:00.000-08:002012-01-24T12:49:38.125-08:00Leg Braces for CooperCooper has toe walked since around age 2 we think. We of course were especially concerned at first as it's a flag often seen for autism and being told he had a 1 in chance of having ASD, were already on pins and needles. Luckily there never was a connection between the two for him and he is considered "typical". After lots of online research and talking to his pediatrician, going to see a neurologist, blood work, it was determined he is not doing it for a medical reason and would hopefully stop as most kids do. By age 4 it became apparent Cooper was not going to stop on his own. On top of that, his tendons had gotten so tight it's now hard for him to even walk flat if he wanted too. Are his tendons tight because he has toe walked for so long or does he toe walk because they've always been tight? We'll never know. We did physical therapy last year but had to stop due to insurance issues. This fall we pursued it again and after getting his tendons looser, we were still unsuccessful in getting him to walk flat without reminding and then it doesn't last but minutes. He pops right back up.

So, now we've come to leg braces. We went to get them yesterday and I just feel so bad he has to wear these. I am trying to remind myself that other kids have to endure much worse challenges, including his brother, but as you can see, it's hard to say it doesn't suck to some degree. I have regretted not putting Cooper in K this year (fall b-day, so we red shirted him) and am happy about the decision now, so he wouldn't have to deal with these at school. I am also glad we got this going in the winter and not the hot summer months. On top of wearing these braces, he has to wear them with shoes all the time and we had to go get size 4XW's for them to fit inside!!! He's 5 and is typically in a 1W. We are really just hoping these do the trick because the next steps are much more invasive and include casting and possible surgery.

We are starting out at 2-3 hours a day for the first week and are to build up from there. As of right now I don't think I'll be sending him to preschool in the braces, it's just to much right now, but we shall see.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIGCaQdUHsPpuW1qbjNnVkOO424cGTa7kzyaYP8ujpUfZI1cMpFQVvnV6jWyJ590KtnzPlE6iglk60YrYjo9f2bV4plmOKMfK0T1CT7U4I07duqXARedj5qLljfPcfSO2BRXlCuj162Dc/s400/braces1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701303374069700658" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUpZWjsCH1i_HbyXpfMdElUIm37Sg79-u06NOYLibBeEnUvbX6i-cOSokdIu8nVu_hUDOoURuVPU7cy-yvuo0Z9GFjbqzxGF9G18wg1xrpEHHtkjjJ1hLRF9USPRmOJeDXZ0_krqhYJ7M/s400/braces+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701303376005858098" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG7c04iicvT6VUYfjnBDARrphD9s7wc_niaemI5vSiigOoh6H3k_fbLjsVL5qggZ0sJnB9PH8NPTcvI5wv5hMQw6PYuiJwekxcksm7mJ0IYDKzBCkt94I-g3GA_9i-pDXplCVhEh79fvk/s400/braces+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5701303369707161906" />Danahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03896052276912048144noreply@blogger.com2
